Learner should bring: Part 1: Spirit of inquiry about what digital storytelling is, how it works, and how it can engage our digital native students. Ideas for classroom connections will be explored.

Part 2: A laptop or a flash drive for saving work, piece of writing, 5-6 digital images or ideas for images to incorporate into your story

Session Description: Digital Storytelling takes the ancient art of oral storytelling and engages a palette of technical tools to weave personal tales using images, graphics, music and sound mixed together with the author's own story voice. Digital storytelling is an emerging art form of personal, heartfelt expression that enables individuals and communities to reclaim their personal cultures while exploring their artistic creativity. While the heart and power of the digital story is shaping a personal narrative about self, family, ideas, or experiences, the technology tools also invite writers and artists to think and invent new types of communication outside the realm of traditional linear narratives.

While digital storytelling in its purest form is personal, cultural, and traditional, this form of expression can be used to describe knowledge gained through study and in different content areas as well. We will also explore these spin-offs of digital storytelling.
Part 1: Elements of and tools used to create digital stories are explored. Many resources to aid in the process are explained. Work session (Part 2) is optional.
Part 2: This is a work session during which participants can use the tools described in Part 1 to create a digital story of their own. Participation in Part 1 is not required for Part 2.

2. Communication and Collaboration: Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students:

a. interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media.

b. communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats.

c. develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures.

d. contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems.

4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making: Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. Students:

a. identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation.

b. plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project.

c. collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions.

Session Objectives / Goal:

To introduce participants to the idea of digital storytelling, inspire them to bring it into their classrooms and collaborate to explore how this type of tool can reach the millennials in our classroom.
